Chapter Eight

Kacie was enjoying a walk around Rosehill a couple days after her trip to Meadow Lake. She hadn’t heard from Gina or Jordan in those two days, but Johanna had regularly called to check in. Kacie found comfort hearing her old bosses voice on the other end of the phone. The walk was helping to clear her mind and sort her feelings out over the rapid events that busted through her life like a whirlwind. Running from her ex, holing up with Johanna, furthering her crush on the older woman, to moving away from a home she’d known for years and then meeting Rosehill’s protectors—hot as hell protectors—had her head spinning. Church bells began chiming, startling Kacie from her thoughts. She stopped on the sidewalk and looked up at a white church with a tall steeple. It was a Catholic church, she noted. She picked up her pace again only to slow down when she approached the school, located across the street from where she stood. Several windows faced the front street and Kacie wondered if Nic’s office was behind one of those windows. She had hoped to see the dashing principal again, but with Jordan and Gina taking up most of her time, she hadn’t really ventured any farther than the diner. She shrugged, figuring it was a small town and they would eventually bump into one another at some point. She turned down a gravel lane that led to a backroad, running along behind the church and several houses. She smiled when she saw the hill Jordan had taken her tobogganing. That kiss. She would close her eyes at night with that kiss lingering on her mind. The kiss they shared in the snow felt far more intimate than the activities they had gotten up to inside Jordan’s bunk. Gina’s kiss had been hot and forceful, to the point of almost bruising. She then wondered how Nic’s kiss would feel, or even Johanna’s. She sighed longingly as she exited the backroad and onto another sidewalk.

Up ahead, she noticed the road had a moderate incline with a walking trail alongside it. She crossed the road and headed for the walking trail. Several minutes later, she was huffing and puffing from the exertion from climbing the hill. At the top, she took no shame in resting her hands on her knees while wheezing like an old woman. A friendly honk had her looking up and at a familiar pickup truck pulling over on the shoulder of the road. Tara lowered the passenger window. “Howdy, neighbour!”

Kacie suppressed an eyeroll as she righted herself then walked over to the truck. “Hello, farmer.”

Tara smiled wide at her. “Need a lift?”

“Please.” Kacie hopped in and shivered at the warm air chasing the chills away.

Tara put the truck in drive and pulled back onto the road. “What in the hell are you doing way out here?”

“I wanted to go for a walk and saw this walking trail. I didn’t realize how out of shape I am.
